Because only the number of patents alone is difficult to assess the competitiveness for enterprises, so South Korea Emerging Technology Research Center (ETRC) and South patent institution ED Research issued a Green Energy Technology Index (GETI) for both quantity and quality of LED patents, This issue is for appraisal of the global green industry and the competitiveness of the companies' patents.
According to the GETI by countries, from 2004 to 2008 Japan and United States gain 6.5 points and 5.8 points, ranking the world's leading LED patent position, this mainly because the effective patents of Japan and the U.S. are ahead of the other countries, also the quality are better; South Korea gain 1.2 points while behind No. 3 Chinese Taiwan (1.4 points), but its patents quality performance worth attention.
According to the GETI by enterprises, from 2004 to 2008 Samsung Electro-Mechanics gain 10.6 points, ranking the world's forth, compared with 2001 to 2005 ranked No. 16, it increased substantially, mainly because its valid LED patents increase a lot in the United States, and also maintains a certain level of quality. Driven by the Samsung Electro-Mechanics, Samsung Group ranks the top enterprise for the LED patents in South Korea.
In order to avoid inter-action disputes like Seoul Semiconductor and Nichia, Recently Korea's plants including Seoul Semiconductor and Samsung Electro-Mechanics accelerate the cooperation with overseas companies on the LED-related patents. Experts said South Korean’s companies layout LED patents actively, will greatly promote the competitiveness of South Korea, This worth us to learn.
